Annie Rabbitt

Anne (Annie)G. Meeney was born in Brooklyn, New York on December 20, 1960 and was raised Irish Catholic.  She was one of four children, Carol, Patricia and Mark.  She married her life long childhood friend Robert Rabbit in 1983.  Annie and Robert made their home in  Greenwood Lake, New York in Orange County where they raised their two children Erin and Robert.

She is known to all, friends, family and her constituents as Annie.  Annie Rabbitt  is a Republican Conservative and a strong advocate for the people of Orange and Rockland Counties.  Elected Assemblywoman for the 97th District in November 2004, she represents 130,000 people in seven towns and 18 villages.

As a local business owner Assemblywoman Rabbitt has first hand experience of many issues that affect her constituents. She understands law enforcement, feels the burden of property taxes, knows the challenge of raising children and sees the struggles facing small business owners.  This is why she continues to work with the focus, drive, and energy necessary to tackle these important matters.

Annie has a long commitment to public service and community involvement, beginning with an early interest in environmental policy and continuing to the present day.  Assemblywoman Rabbitt specializes in working hard for school tax reform and family issues, using this passion to improve the lives of families in her district.

She demonstrated her dedication early on in her career, serving as a village trustee and deputy mayor of Greenwood Lake.  As the first female liaison to the public works department, her duties included overseeing the privatizing of trash and recyclables collection, which inturn lowered village taxes.  As a councilwoman and deputy supervisor for the Town of Warwick, one of Orange County’s largest towns, Assemblywoman Rabbitt was responsible for supervising maintenance of 103 square miles of infrastructure.

Representing one of the fastest growing districts in the state, Assemblywoman Rabbitt served as Greenwood Lake Chamber of Commerce president and remains active in the organization.  Chamber membership during her tenure grew by 80 percent and boosted the role of small business in Greenwood Lake operations.  She is a member of the Empire State Restaurant and Taverns Association, the Orange County Tavern and Restaurant Association and is a third generation woman business owner of O’Hare Pub in Greenwood Lake.

A community leader, Assemblywoman Annie Rabbitt organized a homeowners association, and soon became its president, in order to improve the Village of Greenwood Lake.  She lobbied successfully to establish a bi-state commission to fund and regulate the lake’s cleanup.

Routinely recognized by her peers for her valuable service, Rabbitt is a 1998 recipient of the Outstanding Citizens Achievement Award as well as a 2001 winner of the New York State Woman of Distinction Award.  In May 2008, she won the Women of Achievement of Orange County Public Service Award for making a difference in the community.  She is also a member of the East Arm Rowing Club where she organized the first ever regatta held on Greenwood Lake.  Assemblywoman Rabbitt remains an active member of the club, and still enjoys rowing whenever she can.

Assemblywoman is the ranking member of the Assembly Local Government Committee. Additionally, she serves on the environmental Conservation, Housing Small business, and tourism, Arts and Recreation committees.  She is also Parliamentarian of the American-Irish Legislator’s Society of the State of New York and is an active member of the Greenwood Lake Gaelic Cultural Society.

Above all else, Annie Rabbitt is committed to her family. Her husband Robert, is the Chief of Police for the Greenwood Lake Police Department.  Her two children, Robert III and Erin, have both completed college, and Robert is currently serving in the U.S. Coast  Guard while Erin works as a police officer in New York City.

Said Rabbitt: “I would like to thank Megan and the entire committee for choosing me as their 2010 grand marshal. I look forward to executing my duties with the same respect and dedication that each previous grand marshal has brought to the Mid-Hudson St. Patrick’s Day Parade. As a proud Irish American and member of several cultural organizations, I am reminded constantly of the ways in which Hudson Valley residents of Irish heritage have added to the development and richness of our region. I am excited for the opportunity to celebrate their many contributions when I serve as Grand Marshal on March 14, 2010.”
